Invited Talk: Energy Management Systems and the ISO 50001 Standard
Dr. Kazemifar was invited to speak at the Association of Manufacturers Bay Area Annual Summit. The talk focused on how energy management systems and AI-enabled energy analytics can help manufacturers.
Energy Efficiency Audits for Manufacturing Facilities: Why Specialized Expertise Matters
Energy audits for manufacturing facilities require specialized expertise beyond what's needed for commercial buildings. The complex interaction of industrial processes, production equipment, and facility systems demands deeper technical knowledge than most commercial auditors possess. As energy costs rise, manufacturers should partner with auditors who have specific industrial experience to identify meaningful savings opportunities and achieve significant ROI.
2025 Energy Benchmarking Deadlines
Like the tax season, there is now a benchmarking season for owners and managers of multifamily and commercial properties. Unlike the tax season though, different cities and states have different filing deadlines. If you need help filing your report, contact us today for a no obligation consultation.

Self-Generation Incentive Program (SGIP) in California
Net Energy Metering 3.0 (NEM 3.0) in California: Impact on Solar Projects
The introduction of NEM 3.0 has adversely affected the financial returns of new renewable generation projects, leading to a significant decline in new PV installations across California. Amid these challenges, the accurate sizing of solar PV systems has become even more essential. Oversizing and excess generation are no longer rewarded as generously as in the past, meaning that over-generation during off-peak hours can directly diminish the project's return on investment (ROI).
SGIP Incentive in California and the Energy Efficiency Audit (EEA) Requirement
The Self-Generation Incentive Program (SGIP) is a critical component of California's strategy to encourage energy independence, enhance grid reliability, and support the state's ambitious climate goals. SGIP provides financial incentives for the installation of energy storage systems and other technologies that can generate electricity on-site, thus reducing demand on the grid during peak periods.
Energy Benchmarking: DIY or Hire an Expert?
Numerous municipalities and states have mandates that require owners of large commercial buildings submit annual energy and water benchmarking reports. These reports are compiled using the EPA’s ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager tool. Businesses have the option to either contract a consultant for this task or manage it in-house. Although the outcome might appear similar—achieving compliance—not all benchmarking reports are equally reliable.
California Assembly Bill 802 (AB 802)
Assembly Bill 802 (AB-802) established the California Building Energy Benchmarking Program. This ordinance mandates annual energy benchmarking for commercial and multifamily buildings larger than 50,000 sq ft. THE DEADLINE IS JUNE 1 EVERY YEAR.
San Jose Beyond Benchmarking - Extension Request Deadline
Buildings over 50,000 sq ft with an Assessor's Parcel Number (APN) ending in either 0 or 1 must have Beyond Benchmarking requirements planned or fulfilled by May 1, 2023. The City of San Jose offers extensions of up to 180 days if you need additional time to fulfill requirements. Extension requests must be submitted by May 1st annually.
San Jose Beyond Benchmarking - Requirements and Deadlines
A new set of compliance requirements for commercial and multifamily properties take effect in San Jose in 2023. The program is called Beyond Benchmarking and requires compliance with energy and water consumption standards. Buildings that do not meet performance standards the owner can perform an energy audit, retro-commissioning (RCx), or targeted efficiency upgrades to improve performance.
Buildings over 50,000 sq ft with an APN ending in either 0 or 1 must have Beyond Benchmarking requirements planned or fulfilled by May 1, 2023.
Los Angeles EBEWE - Energy and Water A/RCx Exemption
Los Angeles Existing Building Energy and Water Efficiency (EBEWE) ordinance requires the performance of audit and/or retro-commissioning (RCx) for subject properties on a 5-year basis.
There are provisions to receive exemptions from EBEWE A/RCx compliance requirements. All exemptions must be certified by, or performed under the supervision of, a licensed professional engineer in California.
San Jose Energy and Water Building Performance Ordinance (EW BPO)
The Energy and Water Building Performance Ordinance (EWBPO) is a policy implemented by the City of San Jose to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote sustainability. The ordinance requires non-residential buildings over 20,000 square feet and multifamily buildings with five or more units to disclose their energy and water usage and to conduct energy and water audits at specific intervals.
Energy Benchmarking
Energy benchmarking ordinances require building owners to track and report energy performance data. The goal is to raise awareness, identify areas for improvement, and create a competitive market for energy-efficient buildings.
Free Energy Benchmarking Service for Non-Profit Organizations
As a business, we believe in the importance of supporting our community and giving back whenever possible. That’s why we are thrilled to announce our commitment to offering free energy benchmarking services to a limited number of non-profit organizations including K-12 schools, museums, and hospitals.
Los Angeles Existing Buildings Energy and Water Efficiency Program (LA EBEWE)
The Existing Buildings Energy & Water Efficiency Program (EBEWE) in the City of Los Angeles consists of two parts: 1) Benchmarking and 2) Audits and Retro-Commissioning (A/RCx). It requires building owners to submit an annual energy and water usage report and submit an energy audit and retro-commissioning report, performed by a qualified professional, every 5 years.
ENERGY STAR Certification
ENERGY STAR certification is a voluntary program administered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that recognizes buildings that meet energy efficiency standards set by the EPA.
